COMAL Corner #7
===== ====== ==
by: Joel Ellis Rea of LoadStar
We are starting a BRAND NEW Feature
for this issue! As many of you know,
PlayNet Inc. has started the unique
"PlayNet" service, a subscription-type
modem-based service for Commodore-64
users. It runs on a multi-user mini-
computer, so that many people can use
it simultaneously. They can interact
with each other: carrying on public
and private on-line conversations,
sending messages to each other, and
even playing multi-player games with
each other! (Such as Chess, Checkers,
Chinese Checkers, Go, Contract Bridge,
Backgammon, etc.)! PlayNet costs are
a one-time fee of $39.95 (for the dri-
ver software), $6 per month and $2 per
hour of connect time. There are also
bulletin boards and Electronic File
Transfer. The games, by the way, are
in COLOR with GRAPHICS!! (Via a 300-
baud modem yet!)
What does all this have to do with
COMAL users? Well, every Thursday
night at 10:00 PM Eastern is a special
"Let's talk COMAL" conference! It oc-
curs in the People, Games and More
section on PlayNet, in a Public Room
called (guess ...) COMAL! Many of the
honchos of the COMAL User's Group are
on-line there, including the amazing
"Captain COMAL" (Screen name: Captain
C)! Usually, Colin Thompson (Colin T)
and Jesse Knight are also there. And
now, so am I! I will be taking notes
of the conversations, and giving a re-
port of them in each month's Corner!
Since there are (usually) 4 Thurs-
days per month, I will give short sum-
maries of the scuttlebutt, hints and
other timely info for each "meeting".
If you want to get feedback to me more
quickly than StarLine, subscribe to
PlayNet and take part in the fun. I'll
see you in the COMAL room Thursdays!
The articles containing the PlayNet
COMAL "meeting" summaries are called:
"APR PLAYNOTES" and "MAY PLAYNOTES"
Articles in this month's COMAL Cor-
ner include:
COMAL Corner-Part 7 -- You are
reading it!
COMAL PlayNotes #1 -- Summaries and
notes of the PlayNet Thursday Night
"Let's Talk COMAL" on-line confer-
ences.
COMAL Tutorial #2 -- Explaining how
the FARENHEIT->CELSIUS program you
wrote last time works!
Program this issue:
LK.TEXTMAKER -- Reads in a "text"
file created by writing a COMAL pro-
gram made entirely of remarks (//)
then LISTed or DISPLAYed to disk.
It strips off the slashes and line
numbers, then writes them to the
screen and to the file of your
choice. In essence, a quickie text
editor using COMAL's own built-in
screen editor! Runs in both COMAL
0.14 and 2.0.
That's all for this month! See you
on PlayNet and in the next COMAL Cor-
ner. Happy programming!
If you want to RUN the COMAL
Tutorial Program, please press the
\oad"comal tutor #2",8
'\' key now.
